Analysis Of The Submission By Amy Waldman - 913 Words
Trauma can differ from person to person and there are many ways to deal with it. Writing, for example, can be a way to preserve important traumatic memories for future generations to remember and learn from. Ellie Wiesel writes, ââ¬Å"...I needed to give some meaning to my survival...I only know that without this testimony, my life as a writerââ¬âor my life, periodââ¬âwould not have become what it is: that of a witness who believes he has a moral obligation to try to prevent the enemy from enjoying one last victory by allowing his crimes to be erased from human memoryâ⬠(Wiesel viii). Although Wiesel s Night is an autobiographical novel, authors can also create characters that exemplify real peoples traumas and show how fictional characters overcome their grief. In The Submission, Amy Waldman tells a story of a jury who chooses a memorial design for the victims of a devastating terrorist attack on Manhattan. Along with the controversy that rises from the juries decisio n, we learn how characters would like to deal with their grief through the memorial. Wiesel recalls a year s worth of memories, written in detail to create images that would give the reader some insight into the traumatic events of World War II. However, Night is not a novel that states historical facts, rather a collection of personal struggles Wiesel faced throughout the Holocaust, beginning with the deportation from his home in Sighet. Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, that turned my lifeShow MoreRelatedStephen P. Robbins Timothy A. Poetry Essay Thesis Example For Students
Poetry Essay Thesis Explore how perceptions of belonging and not belonging can be influenced by connections to places. Belonging refers to the acceptance of a common culture and traditions and the adoption of these practices into ones own personality. A common view of belonging is that it becomes manifested due to connections to a place, and a homogeneous, undifferentiated culture. This belonging is thus felt because of assimilation and espousal of a common language, culture and way of life. This view is expressed in the poem Migrant Hostel by Peter Crooknecks, in which the importance of connections to place are highlighted as the way through which to direct their sense of belonging. However, in the poem SST Patriots College, the idea of belonging becoming manifested due to connection to a place is Juxtaposed to the affiliated of belonging to a common ideology and conviction. Correspondingly, the poem 10 Mary Street explores belonging and suggests that through connections to a harmonious place, a true sense of belonging can become manifest. In the poem Migrant Hostel, the concept of belonging correlating to a connection to a place is explored. The poem is set in a Displaced Persons camp post World War II, in which many different cultures are present, yet each individual seeks out their own unique culture due to a sense of comfort. In the poem, the different migrant groups are referred to as being like homing pigeons. This use of this reductive simile suggests that each individual desires a sense of comfort, which is only available through the directing of thoughts towards an appropriate country. This idea is further enhanced through the way these pigeons became birds of passage. This metaphor highlights how the instinct of the migrant groups have become so corrupt and disorientated that they have become confused and lost. However, the metaphor also suggests that these migrant groups need only to direct their thoughts towards an appropriate country, where the unique characteristics and culture can flourish due to a sense of belonging. Thus, it can be seen through the poem Migrant Hostel that connections to a place coupled with connections to a homogeneous group can allow for the manifestation of belonging. Contrastingly, the poem SST Patriots College explores the concept of belonging, and suggests that belonging to a place is impossible without the full comprehension of a common ideology. In the poem, Peter struggles to connect with his school SST Patrick College due to the differences in ideology, and thus feels separate, showing how belonging to a place is not important without an understanding of an ideology. In the poem, through Pewters uniform, Peter is given an identity, as a uniform is a symbol of conformity, and indicates how he belongs physically to the school. However, later in the poem, Peter notices how the face of the Christian figure of Mary has been overshadowed by clouds after previously having outstretched arms. This shows how Mary, who was a fugue of inclusion and an individual who encouraged belonging has had her perception changed and distorted in reference to Peter. Furthermore, in the final stanza, Peter refers to the darkness around me. This metaphor and ironic pun of the schools motto highlight how there was no engagement with the schools positivist and its ideology. Thus, it can be seen how belonging towards a place, even though important, is meaningless without an acceptance of a homogeneous belief and can cause incongruity in an individual. In opposition of this, the poem 10 Mary Street explores the concept of a deep connection to a place as the only viable way in which to achieve a true sense of belonging. In the poem, the Crooknecks family experiences every day life in 10 Mary Street, as a result of having a secure place of residence, feel a deep connection to the country. This is evident through the way the family shut the house like a well oiled lock. Walt Whitman: the Poet, the Prophet, and the Patriot EssayThis shows that even after death he will still remain English and he will go to an English heaven. To conclude, even though I only gave three poems of deep movement, we can see that most are moving, and few have crude propaganda. Some poems are harsh and discourage the admiration of women as the war was terrible, scarring and they believed that they didnt deserve the glory. It is clear that these poem topics can vary but we can all agree that they are full of feeling, the pain these soldiers went through was unspeakable and channeling their emotions through poems educates all of us.

The Relationship between Stress and Middle Adulthood Essay Example
The Relationship between Stress and Middle Adulthood Paper Stress and Middle Adulthood Relationship Stress affects individuals physically, cognitively, socially and emotionally on every level of human development. This essay will focus mainly on stress during middle adulthood and discuss how stress affects individuals at this stage during human development. This stage spans from 40 years of age to 65. Individuals do not possess the strength, coordination, and stamina that we had during our twenties and thirties. But during this period we remain pretty stable, there is only a slight physical decline. Personality development and adjustment theories, such as Eriksonââ¬â¢s give a way of defining life crisis of the middle years. He regarded this level as generativity versus stagnation. A period of striving to having and raising our children well and making our mark in the world or we do things that are worthwhile. We do this to enhance and maintain our self-esteem. With Eriksonians it is the ideal of shaping the new generation. This could be the raising of their children or working to make the world a better place. Levinsonââ¬â¢s theory, midlife transition, is a dramatic shift in psychological perspective. This is a marked time of thinking how much time we have left. Individuals will think more of what they could have accomplished rather than what the future can bring (Cronin Mandich, 2005). Whatever the theory they may be experiencing the crisis that arises produces stress. Defining stress is ââ¬Å"the mental and/or physical strain resulting from adjustive demands or challengesâ⬠(Abascal, Brucato Brucato, 2001). Most people must adjust to a life that is less than perfect. We need to adapt to stress not just the stress of crises or unexpected good fortune, but also the stress of everyday minor demands. How we adjust to the stress that we endure is crucial to our health and the quality of our lives. Stress can hurt you psychologically and physically. All major life changes involve a certain amount of stress. This is because major life changes typically bring strong emotions, and even joy or elation that can cause arousal in the body and begin to take a toll on its resources (Johnson, 2000). Major life events are stressful because any new experience requires some adjustment. Change is one of the most common event that causes stress. Middle adulthood has middle life crisis for dealing with this stressor. Most people crave order, continuity and predictability in their lives. So anything that disrupts this order, good or bad, will cause stress (Cronin Mandich, 2005). But there are other factors to look at when looking at stress. Pressures, Frustrations, conflict and self-imposed stressors are events that give individuals stress. Pressures happen when we feel forced to speed up, intensify, or shift directions in our behaviors. It can happen when we feel compelled to meet a higher standard of performance. This can come internally or externally. Frustration happens when a person is prevented from reaching a goal because of something or someone who might stand in their way. Individuals must adjust to this by modifying goals or finding a way around the block. Conflict is the most common. Conflict arises when we face two or more incompatible demands, opportunities, needs or goals (Cronin Mandich, 2005 p. 481). These conflicts can never be resolved completely so individuals must give up some of their goals, modify them, or delay going after them. And sometimes individuals create problems for themselves apart from stressful events in their environment. Many people carry with them a set of irrational, self-defeating belief that adds unnecessarily to the normal stresses of life as with mid-life crisis. The transition to midlife can cause a crisis that is referred to as mid-life crisis and entrapment and loss of purpose is marked by this point in life. The midlife crisis is composed of feelings of personal mortality, emotional instability, loss of meaning, and dissatisfaction with life at home and on the job (Johnson, 2000). Cognitive interaction is continuous between the physiological, emotional, and cognitive aspects of human nature. Emotions include physiological, emotional and cognitive ââ¬Å"componentsâ⬠(Abascal, Brucato Brucato, 2001). High levels of bodily arousal in response to stress heighten our emotional responses and influence our cognitions. Even the emotional effects of stress can cause physical symptoms in individuals. Positive emotions such as love and desire can fill us with pleasure, but negative emotions like those induced by stress can cause problems. There are three emotional responses that come from stress Anxiety, anger and depression. Anxiety is in response to threats, anger to frustration and social provocation. Depression, something middle adulthood sees more often, arises to the response of stressors like death, failure, inactivity or lack of stimulation (Cronin Mandich, 2005). Health psychology has become a big topic when dealing with stress. The relationship between psychological factors and prevention and treatment of physical illness has become big business for pharmaceuticals and middle adulthood. Many studies point to a correlation of stress and certain illnesses including cancer (Johnson, 2000). Science is looking at how stress and the immune system interact and this has helped with relief for physical disorders ranging from headaches to heart disease. Examining the ways in which our behavior patters, like smoking, contribute to or can help us prevent and cope with physical disorders with many affecting us in middle age. One thing that has been shown to reduce or buffer the effects of stress is social support. Research shows that social support moderates the impact of stress in situations ranging from problems at work to disastersâ⬠(Johnson, 2000). It is useful for people who have stress to get together and talk about their feelings or ideas to support one another are useful. And studies of Alameda County, California have found that people who receive social support may even live longer (Cronin Mandich, 2005). So when looking at stress and middle adulthood one should keep in mind the effects of stress and how it relates to them and their level of development.

Friday Night Lights essays
Friday Night Lights essays In the novel, Friday Night Lights by H.G. Bissinger, there are several prominent characters who display vivid and unique characteristics. However, one character remains dominant as a person with ethics as he battles with himself over the eternal question of right or wrong. This person is none other than Ivory Christian, an aggressive Christian who is always seeking the answers to lifes questions. In this novel, Ivory is shown to be aggressive, loving, and dedication to everything he does. Ivory was known to be one of the most aggressive people in the high school. He demonstrates this characteristic very well when he ignores the morning practice rules and tackles his opponent causing him to skid across the gleaming gym floor like a billiard ball hopping over a pool table after a wild cue shot. (page 111-112). This shows that hes willing to do anything to prove his role as the dominant figure in the group. He also demonstrates aggressiveness when the coaches take his position as middle linebacker away from him his junior year. He decides to play his new position as offensive guard as perfect as possible. This causes the coaches to remark his playing ability as remarkable... major- college talent (112). Ivory Christian grows up full of arrogance and attitude, however soon after he discovers the power of Christ he becomes a loving and charismatic person. After his conversations with Pastor Hanson, Ivorys attitude changes from being very arrogant to displaying rigid righteousness (page 114). This change is complete and he begins to preach at his local church as well as show more care for his mother who had been worried of him, until his conversion. He may have done this because he realizes all of his life until then had been lead wrong, and this is an attempt to reconcile for all damages he had caused. This also helps demonstrate his complete love f ...
